Caribbean T20 2010-11: Guyana and Combined Colleges win their matches
Defending champions Guyana and Combined Colleges and Campuses won their respective matches of the Caribbean T20 tournament played at North Sound on 12 January 2011, adding four points each to their respective accounts in the event.
Guyana prevailed in a thriller against Somerset with just one run after bowling out the opposition batting line-up on the last ball of the match that was played at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. Chasing a miserly target of
112 runs to win, the English county could amass only 111 before Calum Haggett had his stumps broken at the striker end while attempting a run to level the score.
After winning the toss, the Guyana captain, Ramnaresh Sarwan decided to set a big total batting first, but the decision backfired as none of his batsmen, except for the skipper himself, could get going and the side managed a paltry
112 for 8 from their allotted 20 overs.
The Somerset bowling attack, spearheaded by medium pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alfonso-Thomas-c991, stifled the Guyana batting line-up and at 51 for 5 in the 12th over, Guyana already looked to be in serious trouble. All their rest of five batsmen
fell for single digit scores.
Sarwan and Royston Crandon buckled down things for their side with a 36-run stand for the sixth wicket. The duo played some sweetly-timed shots to drag Guyana towards the 100-run mark. Crandon was the only other batsman who could get
past the single digit figure for Guyana. He scored 10 runs from 11 balls before Meschede caught him off Haggett. Sarwan was the last man from Guyana to lose his wicket in the last over. He scored 59 runs off 48 deliveries plundering three boundaries and three
sixes.
Guyana seemed to have made an inadequate total, but it proved sufficient as tight bowling from Guyana bowlers well complimented by agile men in the turf bundled Somerset out for 111 on the last ball of the match.
Somerset kick-started their chase in positive fashion and at 105 for 3 in the 18th over, the side seemed to be well in the game before a stifling spell from Guyana bowlers well supported by sharp fielding saw the English
county losing seven wickets for just six runs, including four run outs as well.
In the second match of the day, Combined Colleges and Campuses scripted a seven-wicket win over Jamaica - who started their latest Caribbean T20 campaign with a 50-run win over Guyana on Monday.
Jamaica, after opting to bat first, went off to a slow start and were 43 for 2 in their first 10 overs. Opener Xavier http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Marshall-c74817 became the first victim from Jamaica who departed in the third over at 2 runs with only 7 in total on the
board.
In walked No. 3 Marlon Samuels and he swung the momentum in favour of Jamaica. Samuels came hard on the Combined Colleges and Campuses' bowling attack and cruised past his 50 off 44 deliveries. He plundered 30 runs from next 10 balls
to finish unbeaten at 80 laced with five muscular boundaries and an equal number of lofty sixes. Wavell Hinds scored 18-ball 21 as Jamaica amassed 138 for 4 from the quota of 20 overs.
Combined Colleges and Campuses started their chase poorly losing Romel Currency on 9th ball of their innings with only 5 runs on the board. However, some solid thirties from Miles Bascombe, William Perkins and Kyle Hope set CCC on their way to
a comfortable seven run win. They cruised past their target in the penultimate over with only three wickets down.
