Carissa Moore and Laura Enever claim victory in Round 1 heats at Roxy Pro 2012
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore and Australia’s Laura Enever collected successful results in their respective Round 1 heats at Roxy Pro 2012, the sixth of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, which continued at Cote
des Basques in Biarritz, France, on Friday, July 13.
Moore emerged triumphant over France’s Justine Dupont and Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich in the fifth heat of the opening round to secure her place in Round 3, sending both her rivals to the relegation round to surf again in the process.
The sixth heat saw Hawaii’s Malia Manuel and France’s Pauline Ado succumb to an impressive performance Enever that sent her straight into the third round while they were forced to take a trip to the second round to have another shot at the Round 3 spot.
The opening day of the competition saw pretty good conditions prevailing at the primary event site. The three-to-five foot waves on offer was good news for the elite female surfers, while sunny and warm weather brought a huge crowd to the beach to witness
the surfing action.
Moore, defending ASP Women’s World Champion and current no. 3 on the rankings, put on one of the standout performances of day 1 during the fifth heat. Unleashing her powerful forehand and backhand surfing, she posted an 8.50 and 8.80 on the score-board in
the final minutes of the heat to finish with a heat-total of 17.30 points. The score received no serious threat and eventually served to earn her the win.
“It just feels really good to get wet and put a jersey on after a month break from Brazil, I’m really stoked to be here and I’m having a lot of fun,” Moore said. “The waves were getting a little better throughout the morning and they’re holding up a little
more to allow more turns, it was really fun!”
Dupont was nothing short of impressive during the heat either. Doing well to utilise the local knowledge of the waves, she posted a couple of scores in the seven point range on the score-board to finish with a heat-total of 14.90 points. However, the effort
was not good enough to carry her through to Round 3.
Mulanovich finished in third place with a heat-total of 5.00 points, which comprised of a 1.50 and 3.50-point ride.
The sixth heat saw Enever prevail over Manuel and Ado through an impressive performance. She deployed a conservative strategy, saving her energy for the right waves and giving it her all after coming across potent opportunities. In the end, she stood with
a heat-total of 14.50 points, which included an 8.00 and 6.50-point ride.
Manuel finished with a heat-total of 12.15 points, which comprised of a 7.15 and 5.00-point wave, while Ado had to settle for a third-place finish because of her heat-total of 7.40 points.
The thrilling surfing action continued at Cote des Basques with Round 2 of Roxy Pro 2012.
