Carissa Moore and Pauline Ado step into Vans US Open of Surfing semi-finals – Surfing News
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore and France’s Pauline Ado successfully made it through into the semi-finals at women’s Vans US Open of Surfing, the sixth of eight events
on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Championship Tour, which continued at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Saturday, July 27, 2013.
Moore got the better of her compatriot Coco Ho in the third quarter-final to secure her place in the next stage of the competition, whereas Ado created the
day’s biggest upset by getting the better of Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons in the fourth quarter-final to advance further in the competition.
The latest day of the competition saw peaky two-to-three foot waves gracing the main event site, creating a pretty good stage for the top female talent from
around the world to showcase their exquisite skills and experience as they took each other on in the quarter-finals.
Moore, former ASP Women’s World Champion, had been in prime form since the start of the season, though she was struggling for consistency at the Huntington
Beach Pier. Pitted against Ho in the third quarter-final, the 19-year-old Hawaiian knew that there was no room for errors anymore.
As the battle got underway, Moore took control of the heat right from the start with a near-perfect 9.50-point ride, putting Ho under immense pressure. She
went on to solidify her lead by backing it up with a 7.33-point ride in the final minutes of the match-up, thus finishing with a heat-total of 16.83 points.
Ho found herself answerless to her compatriot’s onslaught. The pressure got the better of her, as she only managed to get to a heat-total of 9.90 points,
consequently bowing out to her rival.
The fourth quarter-final saw Ado pitted against Fitzgibbons. Despite being an underdog, the French surfer refused to get intimidated by her rival and took
the challenge head-on.
The confident approach paid off as she finished with a heat-total of 15.17 points against Fitzgibbon’s two-wave total of 14.77 points, thus collecting her
best result of the year.
Ecstatic over her victory, Ado admitted that her win had given her a real confidence boost and hoped for similar results in the future.
