Carissa Moore and Sofia Mulanovich pass through Round 2 of TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore and Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich walked away with top honours from their respective Round 2 heats of the TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival featuring the Dow AgroSciences Pro, third of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals
(ASP) Women’s World Tour, which continued at Fitzroy Beach in Taranaki, New Zealand, on Thursday, April 12.
Moore got the better of New Zealand’s Gaby Sansom in the third heat to advance through into the third round while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
The fourth heat saw France’s Justine Dupont succumb to Mulanovich to find herself eliminated from the competition while sending her rival into the next round of the event.
After an exciting start to the latest ASP Women’s elite tour event, the second day was expected to deliver the same, if not more, action. The prestigious female surfers who had failed to deliver during their Round 1 heats were battling it out for survival
during Round 2, looking to make the best of the high-performance four-to-five foot waves and clean off-shore winds that were prevailing at the event site.
Moore, reigning ASP Women’s World Champion, was determined to bounce back after a disappointing Round 1 heat. Pitted against Sansom in the third heat of Round 2, the 19-year-old Hawaiian surfer brought her A-game to the sea.
Locking her first business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat, Moore unloaded a series of exquisite tricks to post a 7.75 on the score-board. After a long and determined hunt, she managed to add an additional 8.50 points to his account to finish with
a heat-total of 16.25 points.
Sansom failed to offer any resistance during her rival’s onslaught. Scoring a 1.50 and 2.35 off her best-two waves, she finished with a heat-total of 3.85 points, consequently sending the latter into the next round.
The fourth heat saw Mulanovich walk away with a comprehensive victory to take down Dupont and thus successfully extend her life in the competition.
Drawing first blood with an impressive 8.00-point wave, the Peruvian surfer took an early lead. She went on to back it up with an 8.50-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 16.50 points.
Dupont responded with a 5.15 and 7.80-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 12.95 points, conceding victory to her rival to send her through into the next round.
