Carissa Moore barely triumphs in Round 1 of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore walked away with top honours from the fourth heat of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic’s Round 1 that went down at the Dee Why point in Sydney, Australia, on Thursday, April 19.
The successful result in Round 1 enabled Moore to advance directly into the third round without having to surf in the second round. Her compatriot Coco Ho finished in second place, whereas France’s Justine Dupont failed to rise above third place. The failure
to claim victory in the heat resulted in the relegation of both the surfers into the second round.
With tricky four-foot waves and winds prevailing at the primary event site, the Round 1 battles between the ASP Top 17 turned out to be pretty intense, much to the delight of the crowd and millions of fans following the event via internet.
Moore, the reigning ASP Women’s World Champion, was looking to kick-off the event with an ideal result in her first heat and managed to do exactly that despite receiving a tough challenge from her compatriot Ho.
Locking her first business-wave late in the heat to post a 7.35 on the score-board and adding an additional 6.70 points to her account in the dying minutes of the battle, the 19-year-old Moore finished on top of the score-board with a heat-total of 14.05
points.
“I’m really relieved right now,” Moore said. “It’s really important to win that opening heat and skip that second round. I wasn’t sure if I’d get the score because I fell on my last move, I’m super stoked. I really like surfing with Coco [Ho], we’ve surfed
against each other since we were little girls. We travel together all the time.”
Ho scored a 6.50 and 7.00 off her best-two waves to finish in second place with a heat-total of 13.50 points.
Dupont failed to make much of an impact during the heat, finishing with a heat-total of 5.40 points, which included a 3.65 and 1.75-point ride.
While both Ho and Dupont failed to triumph in their Round 1 heat, they still have a chance to making it into the third round by collecting a successful result in their Round 2 heat.
