Carissa Moore defeats Sarah Mason to enter Quarter-finals at Roxy Pro Gold Coast – Surfing News
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore took a comfortable win over New Zealand’s Sarah Mason in the first heat of Roxy Pro Gold Coast’s Round 4 that went down at Snapper Rocks in Queensland, Australia, on Tuesday, February 28.
The win served to add the defending Association of Surfing Professional (ASP) Women’s World Champion to the Quarter-finals line-up while bringing the competition to a premature end for her rival.
The conditions prevailing at the primary event site on the fourth day of 2012 ASP Women’s World Tour’s opening event were far from perfect. The two-to-three foot waves accompanied by slight on-shore winds had troubled the men during their heats in the morning and were expected to make the going tough for the ladies as well.
Losing to Australia’s Laura Enever in the third round had forced the 19-year-old Moore to take a trip to Round 4 to battle it out for the Quarter-final spot. The stumble had pushed her against the wall and landed her in a do-or-die situation.
Pitted against the Hawaiian sensation was Mason, who had succumbed to the in-form Australian surfer Tyler Wright in the previous round. Not in the best of forms, things could not have become more challenging for her than having to face Moore in the battle for survival.
Both the females were determined to extend their life in the event by bouncing back in the fourth round.
As the heat got underway, the Honolulu-based surfer got off to an energetic start and soon charged towards a juicy wave and unloaded a series of exquisite manoeuvres to post a 9.10 on the score-board.
She continued the momentum to soon lock another wave and score an 8.03 off it to move to a heat-total of 17.13 points.
Mason, on the other hand, failed to read the conditions well and remained deprived of opportunities to score big. Despite a determined effort, she only managed to score a couple of fives off her best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 10.80 points. The inadequate score forced her to surrender victory and thus the Quarter-final spot to Moore.
The surfing action continued at Snapper Rocks with the remaining heats of Roxy Pro Gold Coast’s Round 4.
