Carissa Moore downs Courtney Conlogue to advance to the Dow AgroSciences Pro Semi-finals
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore got the better of America’s Courtney Conlogue in the fourth Quarter-final of the TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival featuring the Dow AgroSciences Pro, third of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World
Title Series, which continued at Fitzroy Beach in Taranaki, New Zealand, on Saturday, April 14.
The crucial success over Conlogue in the Quarter-final served to carry Moore into the Semi-final while bringing the competition to a premature end for her rival in the process.
The three foot waves on offer at the primary event site gave plenty of opportunities to the prestigious female surfers to put their stylish skills on display while battling for survival and getting a title shot.
The fourth Quarter-final pitted Moore, reigning ASP Women’s World Champion, against Conlogue in a battle for the Semi-final slot.
Both the surfers had been exhibiting a promising form throughout the course of the event to eventually reach the Quarter-final stage. Besting some of the best female surfers from around the globe had given both the surfers plenty of confidence to take each
other on, especially Conlogue as she was up against the young Hawaiian who had remained the biggest standout through the previous year.
As the fourth Quarter-final got underway, both the surfers got off to a modest start, taking their time to adjust to the conditions.
Almost halfway through the heat, the 19-year-old Moore stepped up to lock a relatively juicy wave and utilised it to unleash a combination of quick turns. Earning a 7.33 from the judges for the effort, Moore moved into the lead. Keeping the momentum going,
she immediately backed it up with an impressive 8.33-point wave to move to a heat-total of 15.66 points.
Conlogue gradually built momentum during the early stages of the heat to eventually begin her charge halfway through the heat. Pushing hard on her first business-wave, she posted a 7.00 on the score-board and went on to add an additional 5.90 points to her
account. Finishing with a resultant heat-total of 12.90 points, the American surfer was forced to concede victory and thus the Semi-final slot to Moore.
