Carissa Moore downs Courtney Conlogue to take out Vans US Open of Surfing – Surfing news
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore claimed the overall victory at women’s Vans US Open of Surfing by getting the better of America’s Courtney Conlogue in the final that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Sunday, July 28, 2013.
The 20-year-old Hawaiian had been on a roll since the start of the event, but was clearly pushed to the limit during her battle against the local favourite, who was in a formidable form as well, in the final.
Both the surfers fought tooth-and-nail in what turned out to be a real nail-biter, but once the dust settled, it was Moore who stood victorious. It took her a while to become aware of her success, as she initially found herself under the impression that
it was Conlogue who had clinched the win.
“To be honest I’m a little shocked right now because I thought Courtney (Conlogue) won when the crowd erupted on that last wave,” Moore said. “I let her go and I had priority and it was a bad decision, but I’m stoked that it worked out in my favour. I was
happy to be in the final and Courtney’s in the title race and I had fun, but I was definitely nervous at the end of that heat. It’s such an honour to win this event in front of this big crowd. I feel amazing!”
Moore, former ASP Women’s World Champion, had managed to survive some pretty tough heats while making her way into the finals and it seemed that she had no intention of letting her effort go to waste.
Getting down to business right from the start of the final, the Hawaiian surfer locked a juicy wave in the opening minutes of the heat to post an 8.17 on the score-board. Keeping the momentum going, she added an additional 7.83 points to her account off
the very next wave, thus getting to an intimidating heat-total of 16.00 points.
Conlogue got off to a relatively slow start, but eventually broke free of the shackles with a 7.50-point ride a few minutes past the mid-way stage. In the dying minutes of the heat, she locked a juicy wave and unloaded a combination of powerful carves and
turns, hoping to earn just enough score to edge past her rival. However, she ended up getting a 7.77 for the ride, consequently finishing runner-up overall with a heat-total of 15.27 points.
With her success in Vans US Open of Surfing, Moore moved to the No.1 spot on the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour rankings, whereas Conlogue moved to the No.3 spot.
