Carissa Moore moves into the Quarter-final of Billabong Women’s Rio Pro – Surfing News
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore moved directly into the Quarter-final of the Billabong Women’s Rio Pro, the latest stop of the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, after emerging triumphant in a nail-biting fourth heat of Round 3 that
took place at the primary event site of Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday, May 12.
Australia’s Laura Enever barely missed out on the top spot and thus had to settle for second place, while France’s Pauline Ado finished third. Both the surfers were consequently forced to take a trip to the elimination Round 4 in order to try and squeeze
their way into the Quarter-final.
The surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site of Barra da Tijuca turned out to be quite demanding, with challenging one-to-two foot waves making the elite female surfers work real word to post a couple of decent scores on the score-board.
The fourth heat of Round 3 pitted Moore against Enever and Ado in a battle for the Quarter-final spot.
Moore, reigning ASP Women’s World Champion and current No.5 on the ASP World Title Rankings, had not been exhibiting the same formidable form that had allowed her to steal the show completely during the previous season.
The 19-year-old Hawaiian did not get off to the best of start during the battle for the Quarter-final spot, collecting a series of ordinary scores. She stepped up halfway through the heat to post a 5.50 on the score-board and went on to add an additional
6.33 points to her account in the dying minutes of the heat to finish with a decisive heat-total of 11.83 points.
“It would be great to build momentum off of this event for the rest of the year,” Moore said. “Each event is a clean slate and I’m trying to find momentum and find rhythm. I haven’t really done as well as last year this season, but I’m stoked to be surfing
and travelling and I’m looking forward to the finish of this year.”
Enever got off to an excellent start, collecting a 7.17 off her first business-wave, but failed to back it up with a 4.50-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 11.67 points.
Ado finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.20 points, which included a 3.77 and 6.43-point ride. Both Enever and Ado headed into the elimination round to have another shot at the Quarter-final place.
