Carissa Moore nominated for 2012 Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore has been nominated for the prestigious Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award.
The 19-year-old surfer would be competing for the honour against a large list of celebrated action sports athletes, namely snowboarding’s Travis Rice and Shaun White, BMX rider Jamie Bestwick, windsurfer Philip Koster and the legendary 11-time Association
of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Champion Kelly Slater.
In an email to the leading sports network ESPN, Moore said, “I don't know much about the award, but it's certainly an honour to be nominated alongside those athletes. Winning the world title in France was a definite highlight [of 2011]. Being able to raise
the Hawaiian flag above my head and represent where I come from was a dream come true.”
The Honolulu-based surfer had completely dominated the female surfing events during the 2011 ASP Women’s World Tour. She successfully kept herself in the top-three at all seven stops of the elite tour. She made it into the finals at six of the seven stops,
with the result of three of the finals coming out in her favour.
The unprecedented performance throughout the entirety of the Women’s World Tour earned her the boasting rights for becoming the youngest Women’s World Tour champion in history. The monumental accomplishment served to establish her as one of the best female
surfers in the world.
The Hawaiian surfer also got an invite to two of the three stops on the 2011 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series that went down in Hawaii. Accepting the invitation, she went on to become the first female surfer to participate against the heavy-weights of
surfing in what is considered to be the second most prestigious men’s surfing event, right behind ASP World Tour.
Aside from amassing competition victories, Moore has also been doing her bit for the society. One of the many examples includes the donation of the $15,000 cheque that she won at the 2010 TSB Women’s Surf Festival in New Zealand to the Waitara Bar Boardriders
Club.
"I just try to give back in some way every year either with ... time [or] donations," said the young Hawaiian sensation.
Despite all her generosity and success in surfing competitions, Moore is not the favourite to walk away with the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year, especially with the likes of Slater and White in contention for the honours.
