Carissa Moore prevails over Laura Enever to enter Billabong Women’s Rio Pro Semi-finals
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore triumphed over Australia’s Laura Enever in the fourth Quarter-final of Billabong Women’s Rio Pro, the fifth of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series, that went down at the main
event venue of Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday, May 12.
While the outcome of the battle served to carry Moore into the Semi-finals, it removed Enever from the contention for the event title.
“It would be great to build momentum off of this event for the rest of the year,” Moore said. “Each event is a clean slate and I’m trying to find momentum and find rhythm. I haven’t really done as well as last year this season, but I’m stoked to be surfing
and travelling and I’m looking forward to the finish of this year.”
The tricky one-to-two foot waves gracing the primary event site on Saturday afternoon did not make it easy for the elite ASP female surfers to collect good scores. It pretty much came down to luck as the search for a couple of decent scores was conducted,
as not every heat got blessed with a good wave, nor did it arrive in the direction of every surfer.
Pitted against Enever in the fourth Quarter-final, the reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Moore had her task clearly cut out for her. The battle was not going to be an easy one considering the form that her rival was in and the scarcity of promising potential
scoring opportunities.
As the battle for the Semi-final spot got underway, both Moore and Enever looked pretty uncomfortable in the demanding surfing conditions. Moore only managed to collect a 4.10 off her first business-wave and posted another 4.33 on the score-board off her
second business-wave to reach a heat-total of 8.43 points.
Enever did not have much luck with the waves either. Scoring a 4.83 and 3.50 off her best-two waves, the Australian surfer finished with a resultant heat-total of 8.33 points. The 0.10-point deficit caused her to concede victory and consequently the Semi-final
spot to Moore.
