Carl Crawford’s eleventh inning RBI takes Boston Red Sox over the Minnesota Twins 2-1 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox left-fielder Carl Crawford hit a tie-breaking RBI in the additional eleventh inning as the club defeated the Minnesota Twins 2-1 at Fenway Park in Boston on May 9.
Crawford expressed his excitement as, “I saw him and I was yelling, 'Go, go,'. It's always nice to get walkoffs. I'll take 'em all the time.”
It seemed that it was the day of pitchers as both teams were unable to score even a single run in the first four innings of the game. The Red Sox opened their account in the fifth inning when Jason Varitek hit a lead-off double and moved to third base on
the grounder of Jacoby Ellsbury. Jacoby went 1-for-5 with the bat, as he extended his hitting streak to 18 games by taking a single in the third inning.
Jose Iglesias was outstanding throughout the current season. He performed well in this game as he completed a run on the hit of Jed Lowrie, who went 1-for-4. He took the place of Marco Scutaro, who is on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained oblique.
The Red Sox Manager Terry Francona was pleased with his performance and said, “He probably didn't get out as far as he could have, but he was probably running about as fast as he'll ever run.”
At the end of the fifth inning, the Red Sox were on top 1-0. The sixth and seventh innings also remained empty for both sides. Denard Span was the only player in the Twins’ roster who added a run in their scorecard. Span reached third base on his infield
hit and completed a single to tie the game 1-all in the eighth inning.
Jason Kubel struggled with the bat as he scooped the ball over second baseman towards right centre-field but was unable to reach on the loaded bases and got out. The Twins’ batters connected with the ball in almost each inning but their runners failed to
score the runs, as they also missed a scoring opportunity in the sixth inning.
The game remained level until the ninth inning so an additional 10th inning was given to both sides but no score had been added. In the 11th inning, Crawford took a walk-off single to give the Red Sox 'a sigh of relief' and got his
team 2-1.
The Twins’ Manager Ron Gardenhire was disappointed with the batters’ performance. Speaking to reporters, he said, “We just haven't been scoring runs and it continued tonight. He didn’t want me to come on his dirt.”
The Red Sox starter Josh Beckett threw seven scoreless innings and gave away six hits with five strike-outs.
