Carl Edwards breaks his 70-race losing streak in Kobalt Tools 500
Carl Edwards was exuberant after breaking a 70-race losing streak by winning the Kobalt Tools 500 at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday 14 November.
After climbing the ladder to wave the checkered flag, Edwards said, "Those are moments, the two times I've done that, I'll never forget those. It's really neat to go up there. I would highly recommend it to anybody. It feels real neat."
Speaking to reporters after a fan celebration in Arizona, Edwards said that he was happy to have taken the victory, and he was happy to get a chance to celebrate.
Caught up in the moment, Edwards exclaimed, "But everybody's really excited. I had never really considered doing that until that gate was open at Texas, until the hole in the fence at Texas was right in front of me."
After the NASCAR race, Edwards talked about how difficult it is to prepare and execute a race. "You've chosen this path and you're just hoping that everything works out, that the race goes the distance, that the amount of fuel I was saving, I was hoping
that was the right amount."
Toyota racers Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin were ahead of Edwards at the start, but Edwards was in the lead by Lap 267.
"I thought we were 12 [laps] short. Then the caution came out. I thought we were maybe six short or something like that."
Edwards concluded that it has been a long haul for his team, but that despite difficult times they have pulled through, against all odds.
He stated, "I'm very proud of how our team has come together through, you know, this past year and a half or two years since we've won. I'm very proud to be a part of this team because we very easily could have fallen apart."
