Carl Edwards of Roush Fenway Racing feels comfortable leading Chase standings – NASCAR news
Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards is satisfied by leading the Chase for the 2011 Sprint Cup.
He has led the points table more than any other driver in the season.
Edwards said, “I've been doing this just long enough now to realise how great any advantage is. Early on, I think maybe even in 2008, I felt that being in the points lead had some sort of pressure, it was an unfamiliar feeling, but especially this season
we've led the points for a number of races.”
After the recent win bagged by Tony Stewart at Martinsville, he claimed to give Edwards a tough time to stay on the lead for the last three events.
The RFR driver has stood at the top of the points table for 18 races out of the held 32 races in the ongoing 2011 season. His most led races were from the regular part of the season.
Three weeks ago at Kansas, his scores again pushed him back to the lead in the season’s points table. His consistent finishes in the initial three rounds since the Chase start helped him to gain the lead.
Edwards added, “I have a comfort level with that and this week in particular, this week has been a relief to have this points advantage. It doesn't bother me anymore to lead the points. It doesn't add stress to me personally, it's just a cushion and part
of that comes from realising how quickly it can go away.”
He also added that the point’s gap can be shortened at any time by losing a single race and the lead can switch to another driver.
Edwards said that he can lose the lead by this weekend at Texas, but he will fight to scores as many points possible.
Many of his close competitors in the Cup Chase have surrendered to the situations in the last few weeks but he efficiently managed to avoid any kind of troubles.
Though he has not won any race in the season since the third event held at Las Vegas but still he comes back to take the lead.
In the 2008 NASCAR season, Edwards and Jimmie Johnson were the title rivals in the Sprint Cup chase, but some technical issues at Charlotte and an incident at Talladega hampered him from claiming it.
