Froch-Abraham bout gets that much sweeter
If Carl Froch can’t get his way in the ring, he’ll get it out of it.
Following a complaint submitted by the British former champion to the World Boxing Council (WBC), his upcoming November 27 bout in Helsinki with Arthur Abraham will be for the WBC super middleweight championship.
Last month the sanctioning body approved a decision for the vacant title to be awarded to the winner of the upcoming bout between Andre Dirrell and Andre Ward.
For reasons still cloaked in mystery, Ward and Dirrell failed to come to a fight agreement for an original date of September 25 for the WBC title. With the WBC title coming off the table for that fight,
Ward’s WBA crown will still be on the line. The failed talks as well as the unforeseeable withdrawal of WBC champion Mikkel Kessler from the Showtime Super Six tournament, which the Dirrell-Ward and Froch-Abraham bouts are both part of, inspired Abraham and
Froch’s camps to demand the vacant title shot.
The WBC belt was vacated by Mikkel Kessler after he had to pull out due to an eye injury. He has since been cast as champion emeritus (meaning he is guaranteed a title fight with the new champion after
the tournament).
Abraham spoke about the bout becoming a title fight.
“This is fantastic news. It’s like a dream coming true for me. Ever since I vacated my IBF middleweight title to fight for the Super Six title, it has been my goal to become champion again. The moment
has finally arrived. I am very excited and can’t wait to get into the ring with Froch.”
Both Froch and Abraham have a win and a loss coming into the bout. Froch managed to squeeze by Dirrell in the first stage, but was out-boxed by Kessler in the second to lose his WBC title. Abraham knocked
out Jermain Taylor earlier, causing him to withdraw, and then suffered a disqualification loss to Dirrell.
A Froch-Abraham rivalry has been highly reputed and the fight is expected to be thoroughly entertaining given that both fighters tend to brawl.
