Carl Pavano in Milwaukee Brewers’ crosshairs
The winter meetings are almost over, and while some teams in the National League and the American League are looking to make their negotiations count to maximum effect, there is still some activity brewing. Players in the free market are awaiting a decision
or a call that will interest them in the coming days. Some agents are looking to remain with their former clubs, but others are moving cautiously with the intention of gaining a better valuation of their services.
The Milwaukee Brewers are trying their best to make an impact in the meetings this year, and while a trade deal gained the press’ attention, the side hasn’t been able to sign another good pitcher for the new season. Shaun Marcum’s transfer to the Brewers
will ease a lot of nerves on the part of the management , but their work isn’t done yet. There is still room for improvement, and the club will try to do its best in getting the services of anyone they can dig up in the market.
An option to trade Prince Fielder has gone away, as he and his agent Scott Boras have made it clear that the defensive first baseman will likely end up in the free market after the end of the 2011 season. Trading was one of the best options on the cards,
but that chance has gone.
However, some reports suggest that the Brewers have moved in the free market, and the pitcher they are targeting is none other than Carl Pavano. The veteran free agent has been in contact with his former team, the Minnesota Twins, and the Washington Nationals.
His figures last season were amazing. The ace pitched with an earning runs average of 3.75. In addition to that, he pitched for seven complete games. Pavano won 17 and lost 11, leading the Twins to victory in the American League Central region.
Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin recently met with the player and his agent Tom O’Connell. The GM stated that the reason he and his assistant went to meet Pavano was to "talk with him, see what he's about, educate him to what we're (the Brewer's) about."
O’Connell indicated that the meetings were going well, with a statement saying, " I don't know if there's anything more powerful than a face-to-face meeting. You're looking across at the other guy, and you can tell if the interest level is sincere."
