Carl Pavano’s pitching helps Minnesota Twins overpower Kansas City Royals, 5-2 – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins’ starter, Carl Pavano had a remarkable day with the ball as he pitched throughout the game with an ERA of 4.83 and struck-out four batters in the Twins’ 5-2 victory against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City on June 3.
No run was added in the first inning and the score-board remained empty. The Twins got off the mark during the second inning by posting two runs and took a 2-0 lead. Denard Span doubled towards deep centre-field while Ben Revere and Drew Butera both scored
two runs for the Twins. Michael Cuddyer homered (448 feet) to centre-field and gave the Twins a 3-0 lead in the third inning.
On the other side, the Royals were able to put two runs on the score-board during the fourth inning to cut their deficit 3-2. Brayan Pena reached third base on an infield single, Billy Butler posted one run and Wilson Betemit occupied second base. The second
and last run for the Royals was taken by Pena when Alex Gordon singled to right-field.
Fifth inning passed with no score due to impressive throws of the pitchers. The Twins extended their lead 4-2 in the sixth inning when Butera doubled to left-field and Luke Hughes scored a single run. In the seventh inning, the pitchers were again on top
and restricted the runs of the batters.
Pavano gave just two runs on nine hits with two earned runs in his nine inning pitches. He allowed just one walk on 112 pitches. He commented on his pitching and said, “I didn't really start thinking about career wins probably like until two or three years
ago. As you get older, you see the milestones start to add up a little bit and they start to come.”
The Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire had a huge ovation for Pavano and said, “Carl's the story. He had one tough inning. His seventh, eighth and ninth were really good. It's a big night for Carl for sure.”
The Twins posted their last run in the eighth inning when Butera hit a sacrifice fly towards centre-field and Delmon Young contributed one run for his team. Revere was tagged out at third base during the eighth inning. The ninth inning again went in favour
of the pitchers and went score-less.
