Carl Pettersson, Angel Cabrera secure lead before rain in the first round of Shell Houston Open
Carl Pettersson and Angel Cabrera are sharing the first position of the Shell Houston Open by scoring 7-under 65 in the first round.
They played well right from the start, but the rain halted the proceedings and many golf players were unable to complete their first round on Thursday at Redstone Golf Club Tournament Course in Humble, Texas.
Cabrera and Pettersson were lucky to take benefit from the unfavorable weather conditions, as they claimed the top leaderboard position well before the thunderstorm that disturbed the course.
Meanwhile, the rest of the players faced difficulties while scoring.
It was 1:27 pm, when the showers of rain started pouring on the golf course. 51 players had completed their game before the horn sounded.
All the bunkers, sand, fairways and greens were in a mess, as on average 1¼ inches of rain fell on Thursday and became the reason for the game to be stopped.
"You just can't play under the rules of golf with that much casual water," Steve Timms, Shell Houston Open Director said.
Officials of the tournament said that the Redstone Golf Course needs to be cleared after the rain. According to Timms, it will consume time and it is expected that the remaining players can complete their first round on Friday, at 7:30 am.
"Let it drain overnight, and I think it will be just fine," Timms added.
Pettersson, a 34-year-old Swedish professional golf player, scored eight impressive birdies and a bogey in the first round.
He was tremendous on the course and played well before the rainy conditions.
Similarly, Cabrera also displayed an amazing game, as he was bogey-free throughout the day. He carded seven birdies and shared the leading position with Pettersson.
Jeff Maggert and Ricky Barnes are currently on the third position. Both are only one stroke behind the leader and are playing well.
There are also many chances for Jim Herman to share the third position with Maggert and Barnes.
Herman will complete his round on Friday morning and so far, he has scored four birdies and an eagle till the 15th hole.
Three holes have yet to be completed and if he completes at par, he will be on the third position.
After the rain, the course is tougher than before and from Friday onwards, all the players will face tough challenges and hurdles while scoring.
