Carla Navarro thrashes out Iveta Benesova to reach the second round – New Haven Open 2011
Spanish tennis pro Carla Suarez Navarro eased past Iveta Benesova of Czech Reuplic 6-3, 6-2 on Monday to book her place in the second round of 2011 WTA New Haven Open here in New Haven, United States.
Ranked 80th in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings, Navarro has been in decent form since the year 2011 has started. Following her consistent performances on the tour, the 22-year-old has improved her WTA ranking significantly. Still in pursuit of her first ever WTA title, Navarro will take a lot confidence from her and she will try and achieve similar results in the upcoming matches at the tournament as well.
Looking for a placed in the second round of WTA tournament, Navarro made an aggressive start to the match. Breaking the serve early on in the match, she dented her opponent’s confidence levels. Not allowing Benesova any room to play her shots, the Spaniard established complete control over the contest. Placing a lovely forehand winner cross court, Navarro earned a healthy 5-2 lead. Holding on to her next service game without any trouble, she pocketed the opener to take 1-0 lead in the set score.
Benesova broke back once to stay in the set but she lacked the firepower in finer details of the contest. Making too many unforced errors, she let her opponent dictate terms.
Navarro continued to put pressure on her opponent in the second set as well. Dashing her blistering backhand and forehand winners all over the court, she raced to an impassable 5-2 lead. Breaking her rival for the third time in the set at 5-2, she completed an emphatic victory in a match that lasted for only 1 hour and 11 minutes on the hard courts of Cullman-Heyman Tennis Centre.
Defeating a player ranked much higher than her, Navarro will be feeling very confident about the way she played. If she can maintain her current form, she has a great chance of making it to the final stages of this tournament.
Hitting an impressive 70 per cent first serve, Navarro had certainly done her home work as she did not give too many opportunities to her opponent. Converting half of the break points, she played the big points really well. Claiming 56 per cent points at the receiving end, she played with an attacking frame of mind.
Benesova, on the other hand, failed to convert few easy scoring opportunities and she paid the price for leaking points. The Czech tennis pro will be eying a strong comeback on her next WTA appearance.
