Carla Suarez Navarro shirks Anna Tatishvili to reach the quarters - XXV Italiacom Open 2012
World number 41, Carla Suarez Navarro, made it to the quarter-finals of the XXV Italiacom Open on the eve of Thursday after an early triumph against the injured Georgian star, Anna Tatishvili. Navarro won the opening set 6-1 and
was leading the following set 3-2 when the 22-year-old Georgian caught a right thigh strain and retired from the event.
Exactly an hour elapsed at the clay courts of Palermo when the 76th ranked Georgian star pulled up her right thigh muscle that forced her to bring a premature end to a match that was already drifting away from her. It
was a sheer embarrassing clash for the Georgian who was released early from the possible straight sets bashing at the hands of the fifth seed Spaniard.
Navarro commenced the match with a serve hold and broke serve in the following game but not before squandering two opportunities earlier. However, it didn’t cost her at all and the initial lead was bagged to stamp the authority
in the match.
A serve hold to love further enhanced the Spaniard’s position in the match. She again tested her opponent in the following game and Tatishvili, despite saving a couple of breakpoints, couldn’t hold her rival and bowed down to faced
a staggering trail of 0-4.
No mistake was made by the 23-year-old Spaniard who grabbed another serve hold to lead the scores 5-0. Bagel was on the cards but some respect was restored by the struggling Georgian in the sixth game with the help of a serve hold.
However, it was not easy for her at all. She had to save three more breakpoints in that game to avoid an embarrassing bagel. Navarro bagged the final game of the set after losing just one rally in the game. It was a stupendous
achievement for the 41st ranked Spaniard who was struggling to build some sort of momentum and rack up back-to-back wins in the recent times.
The second set just witnessed five games. Tatishvili commenced the second round of the play on the eve of Thursday with a serve hold to love and tested her rival in the following game before falling apart after wasting a breakpoint.
However, the cameo was over when the Spaniard broke serve in the fifth game and that was followed up with an injury to the Georgian that proved to be the final action from the play.
Navarro will contest her next match with the Briton booming teen, Laura Robson.
