Carla Suarez Navarro stuns Petra Cetkovska in round two – Barcelona Ladies Open 2012
World number 65, Carla Suarez Navarro, stunned the sixth seed Czech, Petra Cetkovska, in the second round of the Barcelona Ladies Open. The Spaniard trashed the 27-years-old Czech in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
Navarro never looked in any sort of trouble and took just 69 minutes to oust her rival. It was her second win against Cetkovska; with this triumph, she closed on to her with 2-3 in the head-to-head series needing just one more
victory to level the scores.
It was completely a competitive match at the start with both players breaking each other’s serve in the first four games of the match. However, the nerves settled in and the inferior ranked Spaniard bagged the first serve hold
of the match.
However, the 28th ranked Czech seemed to have not found the firm footing yet as she dropped another serve game that allowed the Spaniard to build a lead of 4-2. Navarro further consolidated her position with a thumping
serve hold in the seventh game that helped her to cruise past her opponent with a lead of 5-2.
The sixth seed Czech was serving to stay in the set but only grabbed a couple of points before the 65th ranked Spaniard pocketed the fourth breakthrough of the match. It was a world class performance from the Spaniard
who is also going to represent her country in the Federation Cup tie against Slovakia in the latter stages of this month.
Both players started the second set in stylish fashion; bagging all serve games in the first half of the set with scores pushing on to the 4-3 in favour of the Spaniard. However, the continuity of serve holds was broken in the
eighth game courtesy to a couple of double faults from the sixth seed that was completely uncharacteristic of her.
It was the tensed situation for the Czech who had already lost the opening set. However, she did extremely well to keep the match alive with a cracking breakthrough in the following game and diminished the trail to 4-5. Despite
fighting back into the contest, Cetkovska couldn’t perform the basic right and gifted the most crucial point of the match in a form of a double fault to her opponent that rounded off the tour of Barcelona for the Czech.
Navarro moves on into the quarter-final stage of the tournament. She is scheduled to take on the 20-year-old Romanian, Simona Halep, for a spot in the last four.
