Barcelona captain http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Carles-Puyol-c8331 is shocked to find out that teammate Eric Abidal will have to go through a liver transplant.
Puyol showed his support for Abidal and stated that the news was a ‘rude awakening’ for the whole La Blaugrana squad, as they did not see it coming.
The Catalan defender remarked that it is a difficult time for the whole team as Abidal is one of the strongest members in the team.
An official statement by the current Spanish champions revealed that the French international will undergo a transplant in the coming weeks, considering his condition.
The 32-year-old, who has been suffering with similar conditions since the last season, considered the option of the transplant and deemed it appropriate.
Last season the full-back was diagnosed with a liver tumour, which kept him out of action for a considerable amount of time. He returned to action by the end of the season after the tumour was removed on March 17th, 2011.
In respect of the player’s fight against the diagnosis, Abidal was allowed to raise the UEFA Champions League trophy at the tournament’s final last year, after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 emerged 3-1 victorious over Manchester United at Wembley.
The option of having a transplant was being considered since the removal of the tumour, but it seems as if it has become a necessity now, given the condition of the player.
As soon as the news broke, Abidal’s teammates rushed to his support paying their respects to the veteran defender.
While talking to reporters, the Barca skipper was quoted as saying:
'It was a rude awakening. Eric was at the meeting. We then talked to him, and logically that stays in the dressing room. It is him who encourages us. His attitude is an example. We are confident that he will come out of this. We will give him all the strength
we have and we will support him and his family. I am convinced that soon he will be fine.”
'He is very strong; he showed that last season and will prove it again.”
Eric Abidal is expected to remain out of action for the rest of the season and is likely to miss the EURO 2012 for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899.
