Carlin anticipating GP2 success
In anticipation of its 2011 GP2 debut, racing team Carlin Motorsport is gearing up for what it hopes will be a successful season on the track. The team has been selected along with newcomer Team Air Asia
to participate with the 11 current teams in next year’s GP2 championship, and having enjoyed a history of success in the GP3 series, the company is confident that it can set the asphalt ablaze.
“We fully expect to be able to continue our excellent track record of success at Carlin and to supply a first rate product to our drivers,” stated Managing Director of Capsicum Motorsport Limited Rupert
Swallow. “We are delighted that GP2 have selected Carlin as entrants to the new GP2 Series, it is a testament to our commitment to junior single seater racing.”
Carlin continues an excellent legacy on the circuit, with successful teams in the F3 Euro Series, British F3 and World Series by Renault. Entering into its first racing season in 1999, the team has won
an impressive 163 races and five British F3 championships. It has groomed Formula One talents such as Kimi Raikkonen, Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica, Sebastian Vettel and Jaime Alguersuari.
Owner and founder Trevor Carlin reflected upon this history, stating that Carlin’s recent promotion is another chapter in the team’s story. “This will further strengthen our reputation as a learning ground
for young drivers and completes our staircase to F1,” he commented. “GP2 has long been an aim for us and we're now in the position where we have the on-track ability and financial security as part of the Capsicum Motorsport group to be able to give the series
the dedication and attention that it deserves. With a new car and new tyres in 2011, this is an ideal opportunity to enter the series as a new team. We are already preparing for the first race of the GP2 Asia Series and aim to be competitive from the outset.”
GP2 made the official announcement of Carlin’s inclusion into the 2011 F1 calendar today, months after speculation that the team would endeavour to submit an application for F1’s next season.
