Carling Cup: Brentford vs Everton - Full time report; Brentford go through on penalties
Brentford were looking to take on Everton in the night's fixtures in the Carling Cup. Brentford had some good news going into the game, as Robbie Simpson, the team’s star player was expected to feature in the game. Considering
he wasn't going to play the full ninety minutes since he just came back from an injury, the player was featured on the bench for the team.
On the other hand Everton were going into the match tonight, looking to reignite their season, that seemed to be failing so far. The team from the Merseyside, had not won a single game in the Premier League so far and were planning
to get back to their winning ways against Brentford.
The Everton manager stated going into the match that he would leave “no stone unturned” in his bid to try and turn Evreton's season around.
In the build up to the match, Moyes's assitant Steve Round was reported to have said: "His main focus is on turning everything around. He is not happy, that is for sure, and I think the players have experienced that.
"He will be determined to drive the team forward and get back to where we should be.
"There is no question there will be no stone unturned with his preparation and attention to detail.
"This guy is an absolutely outstanding manager and he has managed at the highest level in the Premier League for a long time.
"He will certainly be using all that experience, talent and knowledge to make sure we come out winning.''
The experts predicted a win for Everton on the night despite the fact that, the team had not been doing so well lately.
The match kicked of with Everton looking the stronger of the two sides and looking to create an opening early on. The team managed to do just what they had hoped to do, with Seamus Coleman scoring the opening goal on the sixth
minute mark giving the away team the early lead. Coleman struck a very good right footed shot into the upper left corner of the goal, after receiving a pass from Diniyar Bilyaletdinov.
However the goal seemed to act as a wake up call to the home side, who started to slowly walk their way back into the game. After a long struggle between both the teams, the home side finally managed to pull one back right before
the half time break. Myles Wetson found some space down the left flank and curled in a beautiful cross which was met by the rising head of Gary Alexander who guided the ball brilliantly into the back of the net.
The second half picked up rather slowly when compared to the opening forty five minutes. Both the teams were looking to ease their way to a second goal, rather than going all out for it.
Everton went into the second half looking like the stronger team as they were showing their class and experience in the top flight of English football. However despite that fact, the team just couldn't seem to break down the Brentford
back line.
Everton went close on a few occasions but were being met pound for pound by the home side who didn't seem to back down.
Neither of the two sides managed to score a decisive goal in the regulation period and the game was forced to be sent into over time.
Both the teams were taking a rather cautious approach in extra time. Neither one of them seemed to want to get the goal that could settle the game and as the extra time progressed, it seemed like the only way for this game to be
decided would be on penalties.
The inevitable took place as neither team got the break through in extra time and the game was sent into the penalty shoot out phase to help decide a winner.
The penalty shoot out got underway with Everton taking the first shot at goal. Baines stepped up and slotted his penalty home with ease. While Wetson also scored for Brentford off the opening kick.
Phil Neville took the second kick for Everton and held his nerve to convert. On the other end Foster also managed to score for Brentford.
After three penalties the score was level with three penalties scored by each side.
For the fourth penalty, Beckford stepped up for Everton but his shot was saved by Richard Lee, while MacDonald scored for Brentford, giving the home team the advantage.
Jagielka stepped up to take a penalty off which he had to score, however the defender hit the post with his shot and as the ball bounced off the post, the Brentford players stormed the pitch as they were through to the next round
of the Carling Cup, while Everton were out of it.
