Carling Cup: Chelsea v
Newcastle - Newcastle wins it late in seven goal thriller (part 2)
The game was being played end to end with both the teams looking to attack each other every minute. The best example of such play came near the end of the first half. The away team tried to get another goal almost immediately
to try and kill the game early on, but Shola Ameobi's shot on the thirty sixth minute mark was kept out and then cleared by the
Chelsea back line brilliantly. Almost immediately after Ameobi was denied
Newcastle's third thanks to some more brilliant defending by Chelsea, Sturridge, on the counter, found him self with a gift of a chance but his tame shot was easy for the
Newcastle keeper.
Almost at the death of the first half, Ryan Taylor was on the verge of being shown a red card. The player took Kakuta out with a silly tackle and considering he had already been booked, he was walking on thin ice. However
the player was breathing a sigh of relief once the referee decided that the offence wasn't worth a booking.
The first half ended with Newcastle taking a surprise lead in the opening forty five minutes. Ancelotti had a lot to think about in that half and was bound to make some tactical changes in the remaining
forty five minutes.
The second half kicked off with Ancelotti making much needed changes to the side. The players that he brought on were Kalou and Alex who replaced Kakuta and Terry. Kakuta was probably replaced since the manager wanted a more
experienced player on the pitch to dictate the play. Terry however went off because he still wasn’t match fit and needed to be eased in, so ninety minutes wouldn’t have done him much good.
Whatever changes were made to the side however didn't seem to have a significant impact on the outcome or the proceedings on the night. Four minutes into the second half, Newcastle United had their third goal of the night.
Shola Ameobi took a shot at goal from twenty five yards out and the ball ended up in the bottom right corner. The away fans couldn't believe what was happening but they didn't hold back as the stadium erupted with the
Newcastle supporters drowning the voices of the home fans.
The opportunity for that goal came as a result of some poor passing from Paulo Ferreira, who played a dangerous ball across his own area and ended up paying the price for it.
Daniel Sturridge had an opportunity in the fifty second minute to try and pull a goal back from a free kick for Chelsea, but the player’s strike ended up bouncing off the wall instead.
There was more bad news for Chelsea as the team’s second half substitute, Salomon Kalou, had to be replaced with Joshua McEachran due to an injury that the player picked up. Things didn't seem to
be going Chelsea's way at all on the night, but the team still looked high on confidence and felt like they could get back in the match.
