Carling Cup Half Time Report: Arsenal vs. Wigan (Part 2)
However prior to the madness in the box, Moses seemed to be struggling and the player was then replaced by Charles N'Zogbia on the forty second minute mark as he was unable to carry on.
Almost immediately karma seemed to strike back in Arsenal's favour. The Gunners were awarded a corner which Walcott whipped in and to his surprise the ball was headed into the back of the net for an own goal. The corner that was whipped
in with pace seemed to bounce off a number of players before finally being deflected in off of Alcaraz's head. However Arsenal weren't complaining as they were happy to take the lead just before the half time break.
Had Arsenal not been given that goal, then there would be more hype about the controversial denial of a penalty moments ago but this goal certainly seemed to have calmed all that down. However karma has taken its toll on the game of football
in the past and that seemed to be case here as Arsenal managed to get a goal out of almost nothing.
Nonetheless Wigan broke right back at Arsenal in the very next minute via another corner. Watson whipped in the delivery for Wigan and the ball seemed to cause Szczensy all sorts of problems before falling almost into the back of the net.
Nonetheless Koscielny did brilliantly to keep the one nil lead intact by clearing the ball off the line for the Gunners.
After that corner kick it appeared as though all the signs were pointing in Arsenal’s favour. In the past Arsenal have taken lead's only to see them be cut back due to fumbles by the keepers, or a lapse in their defence however that did
not appear to be the case in the opening forty five minutes, as on two occasions Arsenal could have fallen behind but didn't.
The referee eventually blew his whistle with Arsenal hustling to get the ball into the Wigan half and as the players entered the tunnel the score stood at one goal to nil in Arsenal’s favour; while Manchester United were two goals down
to Wigan in the other game on tonight.
As it stood at the half time break, it seemed like in the second half Wenger would ask his team to go all out and kill Wigan on the counter. However that is of course if Wigan doesn’t have plans themselves. But based on the first half
it appears as though Arsenal are sure to go on and win this, if they can contain themselves and not get carried away.
