Carling Cup: Manchester United’s manager says Hernandez’s praise justified
Manchester United just about scrapped through to the quarter finals of the Carling Cup competition after winning their home tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men had to do it the hard way as a late winner by Javier
Hernandez pulled the Red Devils across the finish line. The first half of the match was apparently quite dull as both the teams showed a lack of quality and desperation but the second half saw a total of five goals as Wolves gave a good account of themselves.
Manchester United, who are current holders of the Carling Cup competition will be looking to retain their trophy once again as they did last season after winning the Carling Cup in 2008 as well. It was been a mixed season so far for the Red Devils, who have
been blighted by injuries to Ryan Giggs, Michael Owen, Owen Hargreaves and Antonio Valencia.
Sir Alex Ferguson deployed a relatively inexperienced lineup against Wolverhampton as the Scotsman gave a run out to more youthful members of his squad. Ferguson started with Federico Macheda and Bebe as his two strikers. The Portuguese summer signing Bebe
scored Manchester United’s first goal of the match shortly after the second half resumed.
However, United’s lead was cancelled out in the 60th minute of the match as George Elokobi was on target for Wolverhampton Wanderers from a corner kick. Manchester United regained the lead through Park Ji Sung in the 70th minute but
the show was far from over as Wolves showed great character once again. Mick McCarthy’s side got their second in the 76th minute as Kevin Foley finished off a fine sweeping move for the Wanderers.
Sir Alex Ferguson substituted Bebe in the 81st minute of the second half as Javier Hernandez replaced the Portuguese front man. It was a tailor made situation for Hernandez once again, as the Mexican performed similar heroics at the weekend as
well. At the weekend, in Manchester United’s match against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium, Hernandez netted two goals to give the Red Devils a narrow win over the Potters.
In the 90th minute of the match against Wolves, Hernandez latched onto Michael Carrick’s pass to give his side a well deserved win. Manchester United’s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson showered more praise on the 22-year-old striker in his post match
interview as the experienced manager said that fans tend to make players their heroes quickly at Manchester United but all the praise that Hernandez is getting from the fans is quite justified. The ex-Aberdeen manager added that Hernandez is quite professional
as he is the first one out on the training ground and the last one to call it a day, every day.
Sir Alex was complimented his striker’s finishing capabilities by stating that whenever Hernandez gets a chance, fans expect him to score because his touch, control and vision on the ball are improving everyday owing to the training he is getting at Manchester
United. Commenting on the goal, Ferguson further said that the goal was magnificent as the striker shaped to shoot but dummied the defender. Fergie, as Sir Alex Ferguson is known more affectionately amongst Manchester Untied fans, was quick to emphasize that
Hernandez has settled in well because he speaks excellent English.
On the other hand, Mick McCarthy was gracious in defeat as his side’s best player on the night was Matt Jarvis. The winger was a thorn in United’s defence all throughout the 90 minutes, he was on the field. The ex-Irish national team manager praised the
winger by stating that Jarvis was terrific during the match and that he is a very important player for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He also went onto say that there are not many better wingers around in England at the moment than Matt Jarvis.
Wolverhampton play their next competitive fixture at the up-coming weekend against Manchester City whilst Manchester United host Tottenham on 30th of October, 2010 for their English Premier League encounter as well.
