Carling Cup Match Analysis: Arsenal vs. Wigan Athletic – Arsenal stroll into semis (Part 4)
The second half seemed to be all Arsenal and this was due to the fact that Wigan seemed to be wasting almost every single opportunity that they got, while on the other hand Arsenal seemed to be doing wonders with every second that they got on the ball.
The second half was evident of the fact that Wenger had a talk with the team as instead of wasting opportunities like they had done so on numerous occasions in the past after they this time utilized to their best possible extent.
After continuing to dominate Wigan for the first fifteen minutes of the second half, the team finally managed to get the break through once again on the sixty sixth minute. This time around the player to score for the team was Nicklas Bendtner. The player
went on to receive a fabulous pass by Vela, which happened to split the defence in half. Bendtner then went on to slide into the far post and guide the ball into the back of the net.
Despite Bendtner having scored the goal, it was all about Vela. The player did brilliantly to control the ball and then create some space before ripping Wigan as though they were nothing more than butter to his razor sharp hot knife of a pass.
Vela went into the game to prove a point to Wenger and the rest of Arsenal and the player seemed to do just that.
However despite taking the two goal lead Arsenal were not done just yet. The team was back at it and kept knocking on the Wigan door looking to create more opportunities.
The next best opportunity fell to none other than Vela. This time around it was Bendtner who repaid the favour and played Vela clean through on goal, but the striker managed to fire just wide off the mark.
However Arsenal were not giving up any hope and after the miss went right back to the drawing board. On the seventy seventh minute, Walcott received a brilliant through ball which was delivered to him by Denilson. The winger managed to keep his calm and
curl a shot with the outside of his foot, however he could not bend the ball enough as it ended up skimming the woodwork on its way out. However the intent from Arsenal was clear and Wigan seemed to have no answer.
Just when the game seemed to be over Samir Nasri managed to spring into life as he received a ball in the Wigan box and then went on to round the keeper, however his shot was just kept out of the goal after being defended off the line. Everything in that
move cried out goal of the season, as the run by Nasri and the pass were brilliant. However the player was once again denied a clear goal, just as he was against Aston Villa this past weekend. However having not scored the goal, Nasri was still easily one
of the best players in the game though he had played for a mere 15 minutes.
