Carling Cup Match Report: Everton vs Chelsea – Part 2
The second half kicked off with Chelsea attacking Everton early on, but the home side went on to launch a number of attacks of their own in response to try and get something out of the game.
In the 60th minute Cahill went on to round Turnbull, but the keeper went on to bring the Australian down. As a result, the referee awarded a penalty to Everton, while showing Turnbull a straight red card.
Cech came on to replace the keeper at the expense of Lukaku. While Chelsea were making their switch, Baines lined up the penalty kick. Soon after the full back took the resulting shot, but Cech managed to pull off a fine save in order to deny the home side
from getting anything from the opportunity presented to them.
With the one man advantage working in their favour, Everton finally started to get their act together, as they string together a number of passes in the midfielder and started to dominate the Blues.
Drenthe seemed to be in fine form, as he kept causing a number of problems to the Chelsea back line, but him along with the rest of the Everton squad, just couldn’t find a way past Cech.
In the 83rd minute, all of that changed as Everton scored the equalizing goal in the game. Coleman, who came on as a substitute just a minute earlier whipped in a brilliant cross, which was met by Saha, who turned the ball into the back of the
Chelsea net.
As the second half neared the ninety minute mark, neither side managed to score the winning goal and hence the referee went on to initiate the start of extra time.
The first half of extra time played out with both sides looking to conserve themselves as they seemed to be down and out. In the 108th minute, Drenthe was shown a second yellow for a late lunge and was given the marching orders.
