Carling Cup Match Report: Stoke City vs Liverpool – Part 1
Stoke City played host to Liverpool, as both the Premier League teams looked to ensure a spot for themselves in the quarter final stage of the Carling Cup.
This past weekend Stoke suffered a three goals to one defeat at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 and were looking to try and redeem themselves in front of their home fans.
On the other hand, Liverpool had not been performing as well as they would have hoped to and a draw against Norwich City over the weekend just went on to ensure the fact that the Reds desperately needed to get their act together. Kenny Dalglish was looking
towards the Carling Cup to be the ideal stage for his team to start getting their form back and hence http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 were looking to go all out on Stoke.
The match kicked off with both the teams taking the game to each other, but it was Liverpool who had the best opportunity to score off, of early on in the game.
In the 9th minute, Andy Carroll went on to striker a shot towards the goal, but the keeper went on to push his effort away. However, the ball managed to fall straight into the path of Luis Suarez, but the Uruguayan managed to miss his opportunity
to hit the back of the net with a pin point shot.
In the 16th minute, Liverpool came close once again as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lucas-c22528 made his way into the Stoke box. He then passed the ball to Suarez, who hit his effort on target this time. Unfortunately for Liverpool, Sorensen seemed to get his act together just
in time to catch the ball and deny Liverpool the opening goal in the game.
As the match progressed, Stoke started to slowly make their way back into the game, after being dominated by Liverpool for the most part.
In the 36th minute the home side thought they had scored as Jones headed the ball into the back of the net, but the referee had singled for a foul, just seconds before the goal was scored.
In the 44th minute, Walters went on to win the ball off, of Coates as he whipped in a telling cross. This time around it was Jones who rose the highest once again, as he headed the ball past a helpless Renia. Unfortunately for Liverpool, there
was no foul or offside in the build up and hence the goal stood as Stoke took the lead.
Soon after the referee blew the whistle to signal the end of the first half, with everything to play for in the second half.
