Carling Cup Preview: Chelsea vs Newcastle United
Chelsea are looking to host Newcastle in the third round of matches in the Carling Cup at the Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have so far been the dominant force in the Premier League and the newly promoted Newcastle, have not been doing
so bad themselves.
Going into the game, Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has stated, that he will be looking to use as many youngsters as he can for the match. Jeffrey Bruma, Gael Kakuta and Daniel Sturridge are all in line to get starting spots in the
Chelsea side tonight.
Chelsea will be without Frank Lampard and John Terry had the manager wanted to use them tonight, due to injuries that the duo picked up. Lampard is still recovering from a hernia operation, while John Terry is recovering from a
knock to his leg. Chelsea's second choice keeper, Hilario is also out of the match, due to a rib injury that he picked up during training. Hence as a direct result, Ross Turnbull is expected to get his call up to keep for the team.
The keeper had been a childhood fan and supporter of Newcastle and will get a chance to field the team, with the team tonight only as an opponent and not a member of the Newcastle squad.
The keeper was reported to have said: "Everyone likes to play against their boyhood team, so I'm looking forward to it.
"They seem to have done fine since they've been back up in the Premier League. I look for their results but my interest doesn't go much further than that anymore, and I'm sure they will have a good season.
"Everyone wants to play football and it's a good chance for me to play well.
"I'm not sure what the manager plans to do with the Carling Cup side. Last year Petr was rested but whether that continues I don't know, it is his decision and I'll go along with it, but from a personal point of view I'd obviously
like to continue if we get through.''
Newcastle are also expected to be with their new summer signing Sol Campbell for the game tonight. The defender has not featured in any matches for the team so far, because he was getting his match fitness back and was recovering
from a few minor injuries.
Newcastle know that they will have a mountain to climb in tonight’s match. Chelsea have a perfect record to the start of their season so far and they will be looking to maintain that record for tonight’s game. The Newcastle manager
Chris Hughton, is however somewhat optimistic prior to the match. He feels that Chelsea will be turning to their younger stars and hopes that they are not as effective as their older counterparts.
Despite that fact almost every expert has tipped Chelsea to win tonight's game with ease.
