Carling Cup Roundup - 27th Oct 2010
It seems like Manchester United have discovered a new hero within their ranks. It’s not Wayne Rooney, it’s not Nani and it’s definitely not Dimitar Berbatov. Instead, it is their latest signing, the Mexican teen prodigy, Javier Hernandez.
After his brace at the weekend that guided United to their first away victory in the league, Chicharito came off the subs bench to score a dramatic late winner in the Carling Cup last night to book a place in the last 8 of the competition.
The game looked dead certain to be heading for extra time after Wolverhampton Wanderers twice came back from a goal down to level the matters but in the last minute, Chicharito broke the visitor’s heart with a neat finish.
After a dour first half that was devoid of a single shot on goal, the match livened up in the second and it was Manchester United who took the lead through another of their new signings, Bebe.
It was his first start for the club and his first goal in Manchester United colours when the Portuguese chipped the ball over Hannessey to give United the lead.
George Elokobi then levelled the matters a few minutes later when Ben Amos was stuck in a goal mouth scramble and Elokobi headed the ball in from a corner.
United got back in front in the 70th minute when Park Ji Sung netted with a clinical strike to hand home side the advantage. But, wolves came back into the game once again as Kevin Foley restored the parity in the 76th minute.
It looked as if United would once again throw away the advantage but Javier Hernandez made sure that it wasn't to be as he scored a winner in the 90th minute. It was a brilliant individual goal as Manchester United broke with pace and Chicharito
kept his cool with an unerring finish.
In another exciting clash, League One outfit Brentford went down fighting as they lost to Birmingham City on penalties.
Brentford went into the match on the back of defeating Everton in the last round on penalties and looked to be heading into the last 8 when Sam Wood scored from close range after a great move involving Myles Weston and Charlie MacDonald on the wings.
But with just seconds remaining in the game, Kevin Phillips scored a dramatic equalizer to send the game into extra time.
None of the teams was able to break their opponents down in the extra time and the match went to penalties. It was a heart break for Brentford as Maik Taylor saved a Craig Woodman penalty to give the side from Birmingham a 4-3 win on penalties.
Another giant killer went out of the Carling Cup last night as Northampton, after defeating Liverpool in the last round, lost 3-1 to Ipswich.
The cobblers threatened the established order once again last night as they went ahead when Liam Davis scored for them in the 16th minute.
But, Ipswich came back strong to make sure that there was going to be no upset as goals from Carlos Edwards, Damien Delaney and Tamas Priskin sealed the win for them.
Wigan also progressed to the last 8 of the Carling Cup as they defeated Swansea City 2-0 on the night at DW stadium.
Mauro Boselli and Ben Watson scored the goals on the night to give Roberto Martinez’s side a comfortable win in the game.
Also progressing to the last 8 of the competition were West Bromwich Albion as the Baggies registered a comfortable 4-1 win over Sven Goran Erriksson’s Leicester City.
