Carling Cup news: Wolves win it late against Notts County as they progress to the next round (Part 1)
Wolves were looking to take on Notts County in the third round of matches in the Carling Cup. Wolves new boy Steven Mouyokolo was looking to make his debut for the team after being signed from Hull City for two and a half million
pounds in the summers. The defender had not been able to play prior to tonight’s game due to a mixture of ankle and hamstring injuries that he was suffering from.
The Wolves manager Mick McCarthy had made around nine changes to the side, that went on to loose to Tottenham by three goals to one over the weekend. The manager was reported to have said: "It's not an understrength team I've picked”
"It's a team containing Premier League players who have cost a few quid. There are no youth team players this time but that's no detriment to them.”
"We need to get back to winning ways and I'd love to have a cup run.''
Notts County were however going to be without Ricky Ravenhill who was suspended for the game due to the five yellow cards he picked up prior to the match. The absence of Ravenhill was quite unlikely to be the only change made to
the side that was fielded over the weekend, with numerous players hoping to be given the opportunity to show the manager what they were capable of.
In the build up to the game, most experts were siding with Wolves to win the game tonight, however a few were insistent that Notts County could potentially pull of a surprise win on the night.
The match kicked off with both the teams looking to take the game to one another, however with both teams canceling each other out, it wasn't long before the game started to die down.
Both the teams, looked to be taking things at a slow pace, after a bursting opening few minutes. In the first half, both the teams registered a few shots, however neither one of them happened to be very lethal for either keeper.
At the half time break, both the teams managers were urging their team's to go on and try and create the opening that was required to take away the crucial three points from the game.
In the second half however, Notts County managed to use the element of surprise early on to take the lead in the game.
Mike Edwards ran down the right wing before crossing a box into the area. Lee Hughes leaped into the air like a gazelle and headed the ball into the upper left corner from nearly twenty yards out. Wolves had no idea what had just
happened, since while the home team was trying to assess a possible attack, the away team managed to just go all out and get the crucial opening goal.
After going one goal down, Wolves started to turn their game up a notch or two, however despite that the team only managed to pull one back; thanks to a penalty kick. Steven Fletcher found his way into the Notts area but was chopped
down by Liam Chilvers. Chilvers was given his marching orders, however Nenad Milijas made no mistake from the resulting spot kick as he beat the keeper completely and placed the ball into the upper left corner of the goal to pull a goal back for the home team.
