Carlos Almeida wins Men’s 200yard breaststroke heats: Day three – NCAA Division 1 Championship Meet
Carlos Almeida of Louisville won the preliminary rounds of Men’s 200yard breaststroke on third day of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 Championship Meet at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Seattle, Wash on Saturday, March 24.
Almeida remained significantly ahead of his competitors and tapped the finishing wall with the timing of 1 minute and 52.82 seconds. He was chased by Kevin Cordes of Arizona, who stayed 0.37 seconds slower from his former swimmer and qualified into the next round as top contender for silver medal with the timing of 1 minute and 53.19 seconds.
Cordes was chased by Martin Liivamagi of California, who was just 0.04 seconds slower from Cordes and tapped the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 53.23 seconds for third position. His teammate, Trevor Hoyt stayed just 0.11 seconds away and clocked a time of 1 minute and 53.34 seconds for fourth position.
Arizona’s Carl Mickelson remained 0.16 seconds away from overpowering his foregoing finisher and completed his swim in a time of 1 minute and 53.50 seconds to enter the playoff.
Afterwards, Thomas Shields of California devastated his challengers in the Men’s 200yard butterfly. Shields remained prominently ahead of his challengers and clocked an effort of 1 minute and 41.99 seconds to enter the final round. He was trailed by Neil Caskey of Texas, who surfaced on the finishing end with an effort of 1 minute and 42.52 seconds.
Subsequently, Bobby Bollier of Stanford finished third in the distant butterfly discipline as he clocked a time of 1 minute and 42.57 seconds. Bollier was chased by Will Hamilton of California, who concluded his race in a time of 1 minute and 42.70 seconds for fourth position.
He was trailed by Marcin Cieslak of Florida, who earned fifth qualifying spot of the discipline and appeared on the finishing blockade with the timing of 1 minute and 43.22 seconds.
Furthermore, the crowd enjoyed mind-blowing performances of all participants in their exclusive disciplines whereas these finalists will contest each other in the playoff, where the position holders will be given medals and accolades.
