Carlos Alzate and Shani Laxson win 2011 UBC Grand Prix  
Exergy team’s Carlos Alzate showed his good effort and won the 2011 UBC Grand Prix on Tuesday, July 12 in University of British Columbia, USA.
The 28-year-old Colombian professional track and road cyclist took a total of 1 hour, 15 minutes and 8 seconds to cover the sprint.
Marsh Cooper of Kelly Benefit Strategies-OptumHealth was the runner-up with 3 seconds behind Carlos. Ryan Anderson of SpiderTech finished third with a difference of 40 seconds ahead of Daniel Holloway and Ben Chaddock (Exergy).
Reid Mumford (Kelly Benefit Strategies-OptumHealth) was in good form and tried his best to catch the other leading 25 cyclists, but failed to maintain his pace. He grabbed the 26th place with a difference of 50 seconds, ahead of Kristofer Dahl (Team H&R
BLOCK) and Cameron MacKinnon (Independent).
A group of six cyclists made their first breakaway and took a lead which included Daniel Holloway, Ryan Anderson, Marsh Cooper, Ben Chaddock and Tommy Nankervis. All of them worked together and build a lead of few seconds over other riders.
Tommy Nankervis and Ben Chaddock launched the attack, but they failed. Ryan increased his pace and was followed by Marsh and Carlos, but the Colombian was in good form and with the help of his team he took the victory.
Previously, Carlos took the fifth stage of Vuelta a Cundinamarca, Cogua in 2009 and took the second place in fifteen stage and first place in twelve stage of International cycling classic in 2008.
A number of cyclists including Tim Abercrombie (Garneau Evolution), Guy Biggar (Garneau Evolution, Zack Garland (Team H&R BLOCK) and Erik Mulder (Independent) were disqualified from the race.
In the women's category, Shani Laxson of Trek Red Truck Racing p/b Mosaic Homes won the 2011 UBC Grand Prix. Shani took a total of 1 hour, 4 minutes and 11 seconds.
Laura Brown of Local rider racing was the runner-up. Her team-mate, Karlee Gendron, finished third with a difference of 45 seconds.
Shailie Sanbrooks (Russ Hays Bike Shop), Noe Cooper (Trek Red Truck Racing p/b Mosaic Homes) and Kristine Brynjolfson (Trek Red Truck Racing p/b Mosaic Homes) were in fifth, sixth and seventh places, respectively.
Stephanie Roorda (Can) also showed her good effort and tried her best to take the lead, but failed to hold her pace and grabbed the 11th spot with a difference of 49 seconds ahead of Jasmin Glaesser and Rachel Canning.
Seven cyclists which included Jessica Hannah (Local Ride Racing/Dr. Vie Superfoods+), Erin Redl (Glotman Simpson Cycling) and Meghan Grant (Glotman Simpson Cycling) were disqualified from the race.
