Carlos Alzate wins the second stage of the Elite Men Nature Valley Grand Prix while Theresa Cliff-Ryan wins the women’s category of the event
Carlos Alzate of Tem Exergy succeeded during the Elite Men, Stage 2 Nature Valley Grand Prix 2012.
The cyclist rode brilliantly during the 64 kilometre race at St. Paul Downtown Criterium and occupied the top podium spot.
He crossed the finish line in a quickest time of 1 hour 15 minutes and 42 seconds, restricting Charles Huff of Team Jelly Belly Cycling and Alejandro Borrajo of Team Jamis-Sutter Home for the second and the third spots.
The Colombian succeeded during the first three sprints of the race and also received the most aggressive rider’s award.
John Murphy is now leading the stage 2 classifications with a gap of 1 second over Tom Zirbel.
Frank Pipp is secured the third spot with Scott Zwizanski and Bobby Sweeting holding the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
On the other hand, Theresa Cliff-Ryan of Team Exergy TWENTY 12 wins the 44.8 kilometre Elite women race in an impressive time of 59 minutes and 9 seconds.
She appreciated her team’s support during the race and briefed that her colleagues rode brilliantly to help her with the victory.
“We were happy with it coming down to a sprint,” Cliff-Ryan briefed.
“When we got there the girls did a perfect job; they kept it strung out so I didn't have to fight for position. All I had to do was concentrate on my jump”.
Leah Kirchmann and Carmen Small of Team Optum Pro Cycling p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies occupied the second and the third spots with Lenore Pipes and Loren Rowney holding the third and the fourth positions.
Third place finish has now helped Carmen with a top overall position after the stage 2 classifications.
“It was a big team effort,” Small said of the stage. I got the two time bonuses, so it was good”.
We were going for stage win with Leah, unfortunately Exergy jumped us, and I was not expecting that. But that's racing, so we learned. Tomorrow's another day”.
Small has now maintained a healthy lead of 25 seconds over Amber Neben of Team Specialized-lululemon.
Janel Holcomb of Team Optum Pro Cycling, Jackie Crowell of Team Exergy Twenty 12 and Jade Wilcoxson of Team Optum Pro Cycling are holding the next three spots.
