Carlos Beltran and Dillon Gee shine as New York Mets defeat Chicago Cubs, 7-4 – MLB Update
New York Mets’ centre-fielder, Carlos Beltran and starter Dillon Gee, both had a remarkable day as Beltran went 2-for-3 and hit two RBIs while Gee pitched six solid innings in the Mets’ 7-4 win against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Chicago on May 25.
Gee permitted four runs on four hits with four earned runs. He struck out four batters and gave away just two walks on 77 pitches. Gee said of his game tactics, “I had no feel out there in the first inning. I don't know if I was really prepared for the game.
All the credit goes to the rest of the team for digging me out of that hole.”
Both teams started their first inning pretty well as the Mets posted one run and the Cubs added four runs. For the Mets, David Murphy singled towards right-field and Beltran scored a single run. Jason Bay occupied third base during the first inning.
On the other side, Kosuke Fukudome and Starlin Castro both singled on the drive of Reed Johnson off of left-field. The last two runs in the first inning were taken by Johnson and Carlos Pena when Alfonso Soriano doubled to deep right-field. The Mets were
leading 4-1 at the end of first inning.
The Mets’ batters stepped on the gas and put five runs on the score-board to go-ahead 6-4 during second inning. Ruben Tejada, Jose Reyes, Josh Thole, Beltran and Gee each made on run during that five-run campaign. The pitchers outclassed the batters during
the third and fourth inning as they threw the ball in perfect line.
The Mets’ Manager Terry Collins was content with the way Gee pitched right through the game. Speaking to reporters, Collins said, “It was probably difficult to grip the ball early, to get a good grip on it. One of the things that is (Gee's) trademark is
command. When his command is off, there's got to be something to it.”
During the fifth inning, New York extended their lead 7-4 when Gee hit a sacrifice fly to right-field and Justin Turner posted a single run. Jason Pridie moved to third base at the end of the fifth inning. No score was added in the sixth and seventh inning.
The score-card was unmoved until the end of the game due to persistent rain.
