Carlos Beltran blames St. Louis Cardinals shaky performance in last three games – NLCS News
As the San Francisco Giants eliminated the St. Louis Cardinals from the race for World Series, dethroning them a year after they held the World Series championship title, Cardinals’ Carlos Beltran blamed the performance in the last three games that culminated with the team’s defeat.
On Monday, in the National League Championship Series, the Giants outdid the Cardinals with a majestic 9-0 win, flabbergasting the Cardinals who had a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven game series.
The Cardinals had seemed all set to clinch the title in the first four games. However, last three were a sad commentary on the slumping defence and offence, as none seemed to be operating the way they should.
"If you look at the [three] games, we made a lot of mistakes and they didn't make any mistakes," Carlos Beltran said. "They were able to put things together -- offense, defence and pitching -- and we couldn't do that."
For the general manager John Mozeliak, the three games were indeed not up to the mark. But he was not willing to overlook the otherwise impressive performance of the team throughout the season.
"There's a level of frustration over these last three games, because it doesn't reflect how well we played baseball over the last four weeks," general manager John Mozeliak said. "But to sit here and dwell on that, I just don't think does this season justice. These guys have a lot to be proud of, and from an organizational standpoint, we feel very good about what happened this year."
Cardinals had come here to defend the World Series title that they had won the past season after beating the Texas Rangers. They secured their place in the Wild Card after making a resurgence in the second half of the season.
After winning the Wild Card berth, they moved on to the post-season to eliminate the Washington Nationals in the National League Division Series. From what it initially seemed, they were all set to clinch the NLCS title as well. However, fate thought otherwise.
With the result of the NLCS, the Cardinals will now have a lot to ponder over and to practically implement next season what they learnt this year.
