Carlos Beltran homers help New York Mets overwhelm Colorado Rockies
New York Mets won their second game in a row by 9-5 against Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, Denver on May 12, 2011. The Mets were considered favourites even though they had been struggling lately.
The 9-5 win gave Mets their second victory of the series. Of the last 6 games that Mets have played against Colorado prior to this, Mets lost four of them.
Thursday’s game, which was witnessed by 21,422 fans at Colorado’s home ground, saw the Mets’ offence sparking from the start. It was Carlos Beltran that charged the Mets’ hitting side and struck three big shots to reenergize the straining Mets’ offence.
Beltran maintained such a lofty presence on the field that his absence would hardly bring any good news for Mets.
Beltran’s strikes earned him 6 runs, all of which were scored through three homers. It is important to note that the game faced delays due to heavy rain for over two hours. Beltran’s joy was doubled largely because he had been a constant victim of knee injuries that held him up from realizing his potential.
Beltran must have felt buoyed. "He was a one-man wrecking crew today", Wright said. "That's a monster day".
While the performance brought immense joy for the team as a whole, it was a rude shock to Colorado Rockies. "We deserved to fall out of first place today with the way we played. Hopefully, it will be a wake-up call for us and we'll turn it around soon", said Todd helton.
However, the happiest of all was an otherwise optimistic Mets’ manager, Terry Collins, "To hit a home run to all fields, from both sides, I've never seen anything like it”.
Attended by 21,422 spectators at Coors Field Denver, the game kicked off with Carlos Beltran’s first two-run homer. He homered to centre on Ubaldo Jimenez’s fastball, giving Mets an early lead.
Jonathan Herrera soon scored the first run for Colorado to make it 2-1. Jonathon Niese then pitched two shutout innings to maintain Mets’ 2-1 lead till the third innings.
Josh Thole scored the third run for Mets in the fourth innings followed by a two-run homer from Jose Reyes. He singled to right to take the score to 5-1 for New York Mets. Todd Helton’s single gave Colorado their second run, but Mets would turn things upside down for Colorado in the seventh innings.
Beltran scored his second homer of the inning to take the score to 7-2 for New York Mets. Beltran homered to left to turn the tides completely against Colorado Rockies. Colorado earned three in the 7th innings to bring Mets’ lead to 7-5.
But Carlos Beltran hit his career’s third two-run homer to secure a 9-5 victory for New York Mets, as Francisco Rodriguez pitched a shutout inning in the 9th against Colorado.
