Carlos Berlocq bounces over Andrey Kuznetsov to reach round two – Kremlin Cup 2012
Seeded seventh in this event, Carlos Berlocq from Argentina tumbled the local wild card recipient, Andrey Kuznetsov, in a three-set thriller at the Kremlin Cup 2012 on Tuesday. He hit back to formulate a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory against the world number 73
to secure a place in the round of 16 at this indoor hard court event taking place form 13th to 21st October in Moscow.
The Argentinean veteran brought his experience into handy at the Olympic Stadium. He made an epic comeback after receiving a breadstick in the opening set and eventually sealed the victory in two hours and 13 minutes. As a result, Berlocq improved to a 1-0
lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series against the 21-year-old and progressed into the second round.
The local starlet thundered into this ATP World Tour 250 Series event with the support from his home crowd. He drew the first blood in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. After Berlocq held his serve in the fourth game, the Russian ruled in the last
three games and eventually pulled out the opener with a breadstick.
Berlocq made fitting reply in the following set. He smoothly swiped his serves until he got the critical break in the eighth game, subsequently taking a 5-3 lead. Despite squandering a chance of serving out the set in the very next game, the Argentine broke
his rival’s serve again in the last game and clinched the equaliser with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked 52nd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Berlocq maintained consistency in his game in the final set. He swiftly swiped his entire serves without facing any real challenge. The Argentine got the breakthrough in the sixth
game and clicked the decider with a 6-3 win.
The Argentinean star will next face the winner of the match between Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz and the German contender, Benjamin Becker.
The fifth seed, Nikolay Davydenko, faced a different fate later that day. He was edged out by his compatriot, Alex Bogomolov Jr., in brutal straight sets.
