Carlos Berlocq gusts away Blaz Kavcic to reach round two - Internazionali BNL d'Italia 2012
World number 38, Carlos Berlocq, eased into the second round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia at the expense of the 102nd ranked Slovenian qualifier, Blaz Kavcic. Easy straight setsvictory, 6-1, 6-3, for the Argentine
tennis ace helped him enhance his head-to-head lead to 2-1.
In 2010, Kavcic was the fifth seed player in the Rijeka Challenger and registered an upset against the then-second seed Argentine in the semi-final. However, he lost the head-to-head lead in the opening round of the ATP Studena
Croatia Open 2011 and now trails to 1-2 after this loss.
Recent results depicted something bad about the Argentine who had lost on six different encounters from his last nine battles whereas the Slovenian had witnessed just two defeats. So, an upset was on the cards but the supreme play
from the 29-year-old Argentine gave no opportunity to his rival to take control and provide any hint of a surprising outcome.
In the opening set, Berlocq broke serve in the first game and piled up lead of 3-0 courtesy to another thumping breakthrough. He held his serve after surviving a bit of scare in the fourth game and cruised away to a monumental
lead of 5-0 after bagging another breakpoint in the process.
The Argentine just needed to hold serve and register a crushing bagel over his rival but he failed to do so. However, he didn’t waste more time and broke the Slovenian’s serve in the seventh game to round off the first set in quick
succession.
Berlocq started the second set in dramatic fashion; lost the opening serve game but fought back to register the first breakthrough in the fourth game that levelled the scores at 2-2. The momentum swirled in his favour and he smashed
four stunning winners to bag the following serve game.
Kavcic was under the cosh after starting the set at a high note and he couldn’t absorb the pressure that forced him to drop another serve game and drown to a trail of 2-4. Berlocq kept the onslaught and won the match with two easy
serve holds at the end.
Carlos Berlocq squares off against the third seed Swiss, Roger Federer, in the second round.
