Carlos Berlocq ousts Andreas Haider-Maurer in opening round – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011
Carlos Berlocq from Argentina played his opening round match in the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011, Bucharest, Romania, against Andreas Haider-Maurer of Austria on Tuesday, 20th September. Playing it on classic red clay
circuit, it took the Argentine an hour and eighteen minutes before he bagged a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the 24-year-old to chair the 2nd round.
As the two players stepping on the red clay, came a huge applaud from the stands followed by the match service toss. Winning the toss, Maurer started off the first set of the match. Winning the first few points the two ended up
in a breakpoint game, and with an early break, the Argentine went on smashing the first game and taking the lead 0-1.
Winning 3 game points, Berlocq bulldozed game-2 and switched the serve back to the Austrian world No.81. Cutting down the lead, Maurer went on winning his first game of the set, 1-2. The scores went up as the Argentine world No.71
maintained his one game lead until game-7.
With scores at 4-2, Maurer served and fell short giving away a crucial breakpoint and slipped down another game, 2-5. Serving out next, the 28-year-old Argentine went of blistering the final game of the set and winning 6-2. Berlocq
led the match 1-0.
Moving on with set 2, the world No.71 repeated the first set opening, breaking the 24-year-old early and preserving a strong 2 games lead in the start. The Austrian replied with his first win of the set, however, and sadly that
was the only one.
Berlocq served out the fourth game of the set and went on to play the 24-year-old next. Breaking him for the second time in the set, the Argentine extended his lead to 4-1. Although the two do not differ much in rankings, however,
clay is the place where Spaniards and Argentineans were born to play.
Serving out game 6, Berlocq went on knocking out the lower ranked Austrian, shattering him with a 6-2, 6-1 loss and sending him back to Alps land. Prior to this match, Berlocq had already won 3 of the 4 meetings the two had, making
this the 5th and the Argentine’s fourth win.
Statistically, the 28-year-old was absolutely perfect with his serve execution. Almost equal points on both his serves the world No.71 totalled 28 points of his service and 34 of his returners. The 5 breakpoints added to his total
of 62 points as he walked away into the second round to face the 2nd seeded German, Florian Mayer.
