Carlos Berlocq outruns Guillermo Olaso in 2nd round – Todi Challenger 2011
Carlos Berlocq, the top seed of the Todi Challenger 2011, went on playing his 2ndround match against Guillermo Olaso, Spaniard, at the Umbria Tennis Centre, Italy on Thursday, 15th September. Berlocq, world
No.68, pulled off winning his second match of the Challenger beating his rival 6-7(11), 6-2, 6-1 in a long 2 hour 38 minutes match and into the quarter-final.
Comparatively, Berlocq had a clear win predicted as he has a better ranking than that of Olaso who is currently world No.188. Other than that, the Argentine has a better clay court technique compared to the Spaniard. However, the
Argentine won and moved onto the next stage.
Winning the toss, the 28-year-old went on serving first and opened up the match and the scoreboard, 1-0. With a rather slow start by the two, Berlocq ignited the fire, breaking the Spaniard in game 4 and winning the following match
leading 4-1.
Cutting back the lead, the Spaniard blistered the next 3 games and levelled up the scores at 4-4. The set eventually went into a tiebreak with the top seed serving first for the 1st set decider game. Rallying for more
than 15 minutes, the Spaniard finally got the break and nicked away the first set winning 7-6(11) and led the match 1-0.
Boosting his confidence level to the skies, the Spaniards fell straight down in the set 2. Berlocq opened up the set serving first and won the first game. Levelling the scores next, Olaso pulled off game 2 and rolling down his
side of the scoreboard, 1-1.
With scores equalling up at 2-2, Berlocq mystified the 23-year-old breaking him twice, in game 6 and 8, and winning 4 straight games to end the set 6-2.
With the set score now at level, 1-1, the two moved on to decide the winner of the match. Berlocq served again to open up the set winning the first game, 1-0. Seeded No.1 the Argentine went on thrashing out Olaso taking out his
anger of losing the first set. With 4 straight games win next, Berlocq broke the Spaniard twice and projected a 5-0 lead.
With just a single game win in his hands, the 23-year-old stood to return the world No.68 for the final game, game 7, of the third set. The 28-year-old smothered game 7 and took away the set winning 6-1 and the match 2-1.
Berlocq now stands in the quarter-final spot as he goes down one on one again Martin Fischer to battle it out for a seat in the semi-final of the 2011 Internazionali di Tennis dell'Umbria.
