Carlos Berlocq overcomes Marco Trungelliti in the second round – Vegeta Croatia Open 2012
Fifth seed, Carlos Berlocq of Argentina, survived the scare in the second set to rally past his countryman, Marco Trungelliti, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-1 in the round of 16 at the Vegeta Croatia Open in Umag on Thursday. The Argentinean
required three hours and six minutes to win the longest match of the tournament so far.
Berlocq and Trungelliti traded a couple of serve breaks in the first eight games to equalise the score at 4-4. They managed to hold their serve in the following four and took the score to 6-6 to force a tie-breaker. Berlocq started
it superbly, as he pocketed five of the opening six points, racing to a 5-1 lead. Trungelliti managed to win just three points and failed to come on equal terms, losing it 6-7(4).
The Argentinean could not deliver any ace but committed a couple of double faults in the first set. He had a first serve percentage of 68 and secured 17 of the 27 points on them. On the other hand, Trungelliti neither hit an ace
nor committed any double fault.
Berlocq and his compatriot won their serve in the opening three games of the second set to take the score to 2-1 in favour of the lower ranked player. Trungelliti hit a blow to Berlocq in the fourth and consolidated on it to go
up 4-1. Both of them broke each other twice in the next four games, so Trungelliti’s lead was maintained and he won the second set 6-4.
The 22-year-old smashed one ace and committed the same number of double fault. Trungelliti’s first serve percentage was low once again at 48 but he succeeded in maintaining an above average conversion rate, sealing 10 of the 14
first delivery points.
After the scores getting tied at one set apiece, Berlocq made the best possible start to the decider, as he clinched first three games to gain a 3-0 advantage. Trungelliti pulled one break back in the fourth but his serve woes
continued, as he dropped twice more to lose 1-6.
Berlocq will face the third seed Ukrainian player, Alexandr Dolgopolov, in the quarters.
