Carlos Berlocq sweeps away Simone Vagnozzi in second round – Tennislife Cup 2011 CH
Second seeded Argentinean Carlos Berlocq eased past a local star, Simone Vagnozzi in straight sets at the Tennislife Cup 2011, an ATP Challenger Tour event held on the red clays of Napoli, Italy. He registered a 6-3, 6-2 victory
over his age fellow, 28-year-old Italian to advanced into the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
The Chascomus native, Berlocq broke the Italian’s serve four times to earn a straight set victory in one and half hour on their first ever meeting. By doing so, he booked a last eight spot at Greenpark Posillipo.
Ranked 69th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, Berlocq made a dreadful start on the Italian clay as he gifted away his serve in the opening game. However, he made a quick counter attack by snatching
the break back in the following game. The Argentinean then held remaining serves with blistering forehands from his box of tricks and broke again in the eighth game to clinch the opener with a 6-3 win.
He formulated a poor first serve share of 68 percent as compared to Vagnozzi’s 82 percent but registered an impressive 74 percent win on it. In addition to this, the Argentinean failed to save the only breakpoint faced but cashed
in on half of the four breakpoint opportunities to his advantage.
After the lower ranked Italian held his serve in the first game of the final set, the Argentinean went on savage mode to reel off next three games in a row before Vagnozzi could hold on again. Berlocq maintained his composure and
wiped out last three games as well to seal the set with a 6-2 victory.
He clobbered an acceptable first serve share of 61 percent as compared to the Italian’s 71 percent but registered a spectacular 82 percent win on it. Spicing the set further, Berlocq faced zero breakpoint and converted two out
of three breakpoint chances to his advantage.
Next up for the seed is the Romanian Adrian Ungur who trashed Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta in straight sets to set-up this clash.
World number 130, Ungur required almost two hours to overpower the Romanian, ranked ten spots below him, on their first face-to-face. He warded off the only breakpoint faced and broke the Spaniard’s serve once in both sets to register
a 7-5, 6-4 success. The Romanian registered a fabulous 89 percent win on his first serve share and converted two out of nine breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to win comfortably.
