Carlos Berlocq wins over Robin Haase in straight sets in 1st round – International German Open 2011
Filling up the Rothenbaum Tennis Court were the fans of Robin Haase of Netherlands as he took on Carlos Berlocq of Argentina. The match was the 1stround fixture of the International German Open 2011. A total of 48 world
players are going to compete in the singles event for a total prize of € 1,115,000. The centre Court at the Rothenbaum tennis court had its clay circuit cleaned up for the match as the fans cheered for their players.
Robin Haase nicknamed “Schlobber”, is a right handed Netherland player ranked at World No.54. Formerly ranked as the world No.52 as per January 2011, he is a young gun on the run. Playing only 353 matches overall in his career,
the 24 year-old has made it to the top 60s’. However, his current performance has not been much of a satisfaction. Out of the last 10 matches played, Robin could only win 4. This surely brought up a thought for Robin’s survival chances in the event.
Argentina has another rising star in Berlocq. Ranked 63rd in the world, the right hander had turned pro in 2001, since then he has won only one title for himself when he won the Stuttgart Open in 2010 doubles teaming
up with his fellow countryman Eduardo Schwank. Losing in the SkiStar Open in Bastad, Carlos tried his luck in the Hamburg Open here on Monday and went home lucky.
Kicking off with a super crowd, the Argentine was happy to serve first but that smile did not last for a long time. Losing a breakpoint to the Dutch on his opening serve, Berlocq broke back immediately to level the score at 1-1.
The set then went on steadily until game 6 of the match. Berlocq turned the tables as he won his second breakpoint of the match and led the set 4-2. Dominating from then onwards, the Argentine international won the next two games including a breakpoint of
the last game to finish the set 6-2.
Breaking the serve for the second set as well Berlocq once against gave away a breakpoint. Haase won the second game to gain a 2 games lead to 0. The Argentine displayed a perfectionist’s show to recover the 2-0 lead and level
the scores winning the next game and a breakpoint of Haase serve in the next. The world no. 63 repeated the beating of the first set and led on to win 6-2 without losing any more games.
Winning the two setter, Carlos easily qualified for the 2nd round of the International German Open 2011 where he will play against the mighty Russian Mikhail Youzhny. The Russian had received a bye into the second round.
