Carlos Condit defeats Dan Hardy via knockout at UFC 120
On Saturday Night, October 16, Carlos 'Natural Born Killer' Condit made short work of Dan 'The Outlaw' Hardy at Ultimate Fighting Championship 120, knocking him out in the first round.
UFC 120 took place at the 02 arena in London, England and Hardy, fighting out of Nottingham, England was clearly the fan favourite. Hardy received a huge round of applause as he ran around
the cage and mugged for the crowd. Condit stood on his side of the Octagon, staring intensely and focusing on the task at hand.
Leading up to fight night, Hardy engaged in a great deal of trash talking. The one item that bothered him the most was the fact that Condit had specifically requested a fight with him
from the UFC. Hardy said that Condit was “silly” to call him out and continued, “...of all the people in the division (welterweight), there are a lot easier fights.”
Condit, the former World Extreme Cagefighting welterweight champion refused to engage Hardy, stating, “…Dan’s a h**l of a fighter. I know that he’s not going down easily in his hometown,
and I plan on bringing it to him. It’s going to be exciting.”
Exciting it was. The fighters came out and exchanged hard leg kicks to begin the bout. The fighters clearly wanted this to be a striking battle as they threw hands for most of the first
round. Hardy was the more aggressive of the two as the round progressed, using his left hook to score points.
With less than 30 seconds left on the clock in the first round, both fighters threw hard left hooks. Condit’s punch was a little faster and little more compact and it landed first to devastating
effect. Hardy fell to his back and Condit followed up with two more strikes before the referee, Dan Miragliotta, seeing that Hardy was unconscious, called for the bell at the 4:27 mark of round one.
Hardy was humorous and humble in his post-fight interview, telling the crowd, “I got punched in the face. Sorry guys. Next time.”
For his part, Condit said, “This was definitely the biggest fight of my career…defeating Dan in his backyard at the 02 arena is the biggest win of my career so far.”
Condit was given a $60,000 bonus after being awarded 'Knockout of the Night.' He improves his mixed martial arts record to 26-5 with the impressive knockout while Hardy falls to 23-8.
