http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Carlos-c8346 Cuellar, the 30-year-old defender, has revealed it was because of Martin O’Neill that convinced him to join Sunderland in the summer transfer window.
After four years at Aston Villa, Cuellar reunites with former Villans boss Martin O’Neill at the Stadium of Light. He has signed a two year deal with the Black Cats, arriving at the club on a free transfer after his contract with Aston Villa expired at the
end of the 2011-2012 season.
It was his acquaintance with Martin O’Neill that convinced him to sign with Sunderland, having previously played for the manager at Aston Villa. It was O’Neill who signed Cuellar in the summer transfer window of 2008 from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 for an estimated 8 million
pounds.
The Spaniard revealed he had decided to join Sunderland after he heard the side was interested in bringing him in during the current summer transfer window. He admitted Martin O’Neill was one of the main reasons he had decided on the Black Cats instead of
any other Premier League side.
Cuellar said while speaking to SAFC TV:
“Ever since I heard the rumour that Sunderland were interested in signing me, I wanted to come here. To work again with the gaffer, Martin O'Neill, and with everyone talking so well about the club, I didn't have any problem and said straight away I wanted
to come.”
Cuellar was full of praise for Martin O’Neill, who he felt had done brilliantly at Aston Villa before he resigned due to differences with the management. He felt the fact that he had previously played under the manager would only help him at his new club.
He said:
“He did so well at Villa. I know how hard he works and what he can do with his teams. The manager is one of the best. He knows me and I know him. Everything is easy. I have been happy working with him before I wanted to do that again.”
The Spanish defender was certain Sunderland would go on to do well in the upcoming Premier League season. Cuellar added:
“I think we are going to be a hard team to beat.”
