Carlos Delgado recovering and readying himself for spring training
Carlos Delgado is still in the mix for a Major League role this season and that could become a reality in the coming days as the spring training period nears. The situation could be developing for the player given his recovery
schedule. The player is eying a comeback and there is a lot of activity brimming in the job market for the 38-year-old first baseman.
Carlos is recovering from a left hip surgery, following last year’s injury contraction. The player had signed a Minor League deal with the Boston Red Sox in August, but made his way straight to the surgery table in September. A
lot of opportunities are up for grabs in the coming season and though a major role is unlikely to be expecting the veteran in the clubs contesting in the Major League, Delgado can provide cover. The player was present at the Carlos Beltran Academy on Sunday
and had an opportunity to comment on his current situation.
"If I am healthy, I will find a way," said Delgado. "I know how to play. I don't want to retire. The reason why I put myself through three surgeries in 18 months is because I want to play. Otherwise, I would have just hung it up."
The player has missed a large portion of baseball being played in the major leagues as the he last featured in the league on 10 May, 2009. A large gap currently exists between now and then. That could be one of the things that
the clubs may not seek to tag to their roster in the coming days. The opportunity of adding power in the club may come at the cost of a low batting average.
Delgado, nevertheless, has been active in practice and recently he was up to the mark with swinging. He has been part of a rehabilitation program where he has been focusing on hitting with the bat and running on the tracks. He
wants to get back in the league but he is waiting out on making his situation count, given his health concerns. He is more focused towards maintaining his focus and he has got a reason for that.
"The rehab is coming along, and I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing," he said. "I would say within the next couple of weeks I will have a better idea of when I'm going to be ready because we are going to start sprinting a little
bit and I'm going to take batting practice a little bit more often. Right now, it's every other day or every two days just because you just go gradually into it."
Delgado has 27 home runs remaining on his personal glory for 500 home runs in the Major League. Will he make the cut for the job or not? That is a question that we can only leave to the future to be answered.
