The Milwaukee Brewers' centre fielder Carlos Gomez has been named the club’s top defender in the Wilson Player of the Year Awards. The Award is bestowed upon the top defensive players in each league and the players of each club are named individually for the title.
Determination of the Award is done after statistical analysis of the MLB Network's "shredder system" used by Clubhouse Confidential, plus input from Network analysts. Gomez, predictably, became the Brewers’ top defensive player.
While there were other competitors from the team, he has remained National Leagues fourth best centre field when it comes to ultimate zone rating – which remained 5.5 this year.
His credentials as the defensive player have not gone unnoticed, meriting deserving attention by all and sundry. The Award that he was bestowed with was an acknowledgement of it.
While admirers and detractors have their respective views, the Brewers' manager – Ron Roenicke, maintains he is one of the good players that the club has.
"Defensively, he's always going to be good," Brewers' manager Ron Roenicke said of Gomez. "On the basepaths, he's always going to be good, as long as he stays healthy. But I think at the plate, I saw some really good at-bats from him, and consistent at-bats throughout the season."
In the absence of Prince Fielder, the club did struggle this year defensively and offensively. The very fact that they could not make it to the post-season was an indication of apparently vulnerable offence.
Nonetheless, Gomez tried to keep the Brewers afloat with his individual performance this season. In 137 games that he played, his slugging percentage stayed at .463 with .260 batting average in 415 at-bats.
The 26-year-old player has the potential to buoy up and strengthen the club’s defence in the years to come. Roenicke’s observation, in this regard, speaks volume of the confidence he enjoys in the team and expectations that he inspires.
While he won the top defender’s Award being part of the Brewers, Michael Bourn was named the National League top defensive player Award and Mike Trout collecting it as the best American League defender.
